About the Author

Professor Janet McCalman is the author of three award-winning social histories of Melbourne life: Struggletown, Journeyings and Sex and Suffering: women's health and a women's hospital, 1856-1996. She has a personal chair at the University of Melbourne where she teaches history of health and medicine. For eight years she wrote a fortnightly opinion column for the Age.
